London, United Kingdom | 12 July : : Members of the Northeast Indian diaspora in the United Kingdom came together in a vibrant display of culture and unity at the United Colours of North East India Festival 2026, held at the Indian Gymkhana Club in London on 11 July 2026.<\/p>\n

Organised by North East Indians in UK (NEIUK) and supported by Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma, head of Tripura\u2019s erstwhile royal family, the volunteer-led festival marked the first large-scale celebration in London to bring together communities representing all eight Northeastern states of India.<\/p>\n

A Celebration of Unity and Identity<\/p>\n

The festival featured regional cuisine, folk songs, live musical performances, traditional handloom and handicraft displays, cultural exhibitions and community activities. Organisers said the event aimed to introduce the richness of Northeast India to a wider international audience while strengthening bonds within the diaspora.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are bringing a piece of our unique heritage, living history and soul to the world by turning our ancestral traditions into a bridge for cross-cultural learning and understanding,\u201d said Susan Nonsieg, a representative from Meghalaya.<\/p>\n

Speaking on the inspiration behind the initiative, Thoiba Thoudam of Manipur said the organisers envisioned a platform to connect people from Northeast India and friends of the region across the world.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was our desire to bring people from the Northeast and around the world together to celebrate the richness, diversity and beauty of the region through food, folk songs, music, handloom displays and much more,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Addressing Awareness and Building Community<\/p>\n

Organisers noted that such events help address limited awareness and common misconceptions about Northeast India among international audiences, including misunderstandings about the region\u2019s geography, communities and history.<\/p>\n

Beyond cultural celebration, the festival also served as a platform for networking and community support, bringing together professionals, entrepreneurs, artists, students and families from across the Northeastern diaspora in the UK.<\/p>\n

Record Turnout and Youth Participation<\/p>\n

Marking a significant milestone, organisers said this was the first event of its kind in London to celebrate all eight Northeastern states on such a large scale, attracting more than 500 attendees.<\/p>\n

A particularly encouraging aspect was the enthusiastic participation of second-generation members of the diaspora. Many young attendees who were born or raised in the UK experienced, for the first time in one place, the diverse traditions, music, arts, handloom and authentic regional delicacies of all the Northeast Indian sister states.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was particularly meaningful to witness younger generations embracing their heritage,\u201d organisers said, adding that the preservation of Northeast India\u2019s rich cultural identity will depend on them carrying the legacy forward.<\/p>\n
